My Training Journey
In 2023 I was introduced to a charity called Hero Paws to see if I could offer foster support to any dogs. Hero paws is a Scottish Charity that provides support to military and other dogs that have been retired from Military or Public service. Hero paws, or rather Retired Royal Air Force Police Dog Amigo (Migs) has played an integral part in the forming of my training venture. I picked Amigo up in April 2023 with an array of issues steming from his military career, he was discharged from service at 3 years old and spent nearly 5 years in rescue Kennels, in hind sight his issues are minimal but his trust in humans wavers from time to time, with over a year behind us, he lives a somewhat normal life in terms of his previous career, as a Private sector Security Dog Handler.
Migs comes with me to work and pretty much everywhere due to his issues, meaning he can cause a drama In an empty room and not many would know what to do with him. It's taken over a year to reach a point where he no longer sinks his teeth into me and looks to me for guidance from time to time, it's through my learning with him that I have grown as a dog handler and learned how to manage and work with reactivity. During my short time with Hero Paws I have watched the trustees work their magic on so many dogs that come through, in order to live a somewhat normal life once they are retired from service which is why I want to help people with training of reactivity in their pets, in order to minimise their issues and be able to enjoy their dogs.
